Wall Street Journal article, Gap Holiday campaign, and it’s my birthday this month YAY DECEMBER!

If I find the keys to a nice fuel efficient car outside my door, I may implode from all the goodness happening this month. Check out my favorite article of the year by Rachel Silverman. I love good writers.

And we finally get to talk about the GAP! Not sure where these are being used, but in some part of the world, you can see children swinging on knitted tires. LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE SEEN THEM!

and that is snow in AUGUST….Gap can make that happen…

AND the day after Christmas, I get to make all my poor loved ones get into party mode with full stomachs and celebrate my birthday. sorry in advance, family.

Sydney, the project, the people, and the UTE

I couldn’t believe there is a car that looks like an El Camino that is still available to buy. They are everywhere…..and I think I kinda like them!

day one…

This project was one of the most intense….Catherine and I  spent most of our time at these stairs……

and lived off of this combination. Thank you Shirt Bar for being our kitchen and making delicious coffee.

We met wonderfully nice people like this woman who took the necklace off her neck and gave it to me.

And this handsome man, Mark, who owns an amazing men’s clothing shop called         Son of a Master Tailor, which I think has to be the best shop name ever..we all hit it off and ended up going to his birthday party that night. If it weren’t for him and…

these guys we would not have had nearly as much fun.

and finally here is the finished piece…

Thanks Amanda and Justine for making this happen.

finally thank you, somebody….
I rarely post articles about me (or at least I like to tell myself I don’t) , but I really like this article by inhabitat NYC, because of all the install photos. You can see what it took to make this happen. I could not have done it with out my hard working team. They also happened to all be super good looking…not sure how that came about, but I certainly wasn’t complaining. So thank you Tony Tuzzolino, Alex Howell, Nina Zacek, Marcos Torino, Ann Medhurst, Timmy Wood, Elizabeth Trieu, Catherine Cieslewicz, Liz Bucholtz.

And of course the two lovely Karen McClellan and Catherine Smith

And BIG thanks to Patricia, Luzmarie, and Guadalupe for the Herculean effort to knit over 300 different pieces.

Here are a few pics from the article… I know it is dated but still happy somebody wrote about it…..This was on the top of my list this year for favorite projects.

Sydney, the home of cheesymite rolls and other beautiful things

I know I should start with the “finer” parts of this amazing and beautiful city, BUT….. if you do not know about cheesymite rolls, you must be enlightened now. It is a bread roll filled with parmesan and (pause) Vegemite, and it’s AWESOME. I am certain this is how Australians cure a hangover, because it is made up of all the cravings one has after too much. I will confess… I brought like 10 of these back with me. I became irrationally worried security would confiscate my bag of stinky bread at the airport….. as if I were smuggling something highly illegal. Fortunately, I returned safely with my beloved bread to Texas…along with UGGS for everyone…..yes, I know, I cringe too.
We arrived sometime before 9 am, dropped our bags off, and stayed very close to the opera house…..and in awe for the next 14 hours….
lovely first day….more to come….too much to tell….

Art Prize / Grand Rapids, MI

This week found us in Grand Rapids, MI, where ArtPrize is gearing up. This festival is very cool. Here’s the game: over 1,500 artists display their work in venues spread all over downtown, and the public votes the entries up or down to determine the finalists and, ultimately, the prize-winners.

So! It’s Magda’s first year as a participant. She teamed up with City Flats Hotel, a brand new green space in the heart of downtown GR that’s decked out with modern furnishings all designed and made right here in Michigan. With her entry, Seating 1, Magda gives a nod to this rich history of furniture design while continuing to challenge assumptions about the traditional craft of knitting.

The installation is 81 square feet, and has 5,184 knitted squares! (Yes – all knit by hand!) Stop by to see (and feel) for yourself. Seating 1 is a giant wall installation in the lobby of the hotel – you can’t miss it. Walk to 83 Monroe Center St NW, and you’ll see a signature Knitta welcome on the awning outside.

If you get the chance to visit the festival — which you should! it’s incredible — you can vote for Magda from now until September 28th. After activating your voter status in person, you can:

1) vote online. http://tinyurl.com/MagdaforMI

2) vote by text. Text 54771 to 808080. (First, activate your cell phone at registration and validate your unique code. Click here for instructions.)

3) vote by app. Download the ArtPrize app for iPhone or Android, then enter 54771 into the “quick vote” box.

4) vote in person. Stop by The Hub to vote in person!

PLAN AHEad

We spent the week underneath the Williamsburg Bridge on scissor lifts, knitting 318 fence posts while the J train rumbled overhead, deafening us. The project was commissioned by the North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition (NBart) and sponsored by NYC DOT and Open Space Alliance… and was a ton of fun. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hi! (Especially the truckers’ honks as we perched and shimmied on the 8-ft ledge.)

If you’re in NYC, stop by the installation at Kent Ave and So. 6th directly underneath the Williamsburg Bridge. It’ll be up for a while. In the meantime, enjoy these GORGEOUS images by our friend Jonathan Hokklo.

Cheers! Now begins a much-needed 3-million-day weekend…
